  • Mandela birth name was not Nelson but rather Rolihlahla which means pulling the branch of a tree or troublemaker , his school teachers were unable to pronounce it thus they started calling him Nelson after British admiral Horatio Nelson and the name stuck .
  • He was the first democratically-elected president of South Africa.

  • Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa and the Oldest
  • His inauguration had the largest number of heads of state gathered in one place since John F Kennedy’s funeral

  • Madiba was a master of disguise, he was nicknamed the “Black Pimpernel” as he was a genius at evading arrest. He was finally arrested due to a tip from a CIA agent that he was dressed as a chauffeur. He frequently dressed as a fieldworker, chauffeur or chef.
  • In 1962 Mandela was in prison for minor charges and he secretly asked his colleagues to destroy his writings which instead they poorly hid them, once they were found the prosecutors used them as evidence against him, if not for that he would have spent 5 years in prison instead of 27 years

  • Mandela prison number was 46664 which comes from being the 466th Prisoner in 1964

  • Madiba was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize which is the soviet equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize, he was the last ever recipient of that award.

 

  • Madiba has received more than 695 awards in his lifetime; this includes the 1993 Nobel peace prize.

  • His hard work in prison which included working in the mines damaged his tear glands ,this made it physically impossible for him to cry.
  • Mandela’s hand print resembles the African continent.

  • He made a cameo on Spike lee film Malcolm X where he was a teacher reciting one of the civil rights hero’s speech, but he refused to utter the final phrase “ By any means necessary” on camera fearing the South African Government will use it against him

  • He was the first living person to be made a honorary Canadian City
  • Mandela was an honorary member of Manchester United
  • More than 25 schools, universities and educational institutions have been named after Nelson Mandela. At least 19 scholarships and foundations bear his name. He was awarded in the vicinity of 115 honorary degrees and more than 95 sculptures, statues, or pieces of art have been made of him or dedicated to him.

  • In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared July 18th “Mandela Day”, which is his birthday
  • Ironically , expressing willingness to be executed for his nation in his speech published “I am Prepared to die” spared him that fate.

  • Madiba loved boxing because according to him the ring made “rank, age color and wealth irrelevant”

  • Unlike contrary belief Mandela was not a pacifist, he initially opposed violence but he deemed it necessary to end apartheid
